Ottville (a new musical!)

Ottville is a new musical written by Edward Bean and Trevor Dorner, with its musical styles lying in rock and jazz. The story is of a socially divided town in which the wealthy have complete dominance over the poor working class. The show is thick with political corruption, forbidden romance, and comedic undertones.  Ottville deals with themes mainly lying in contemporary social commentary which are expressed through an aged look.

Richard Addison Productions excitedly concluded the workshop production of Ottville on July 10, 2011, after three overwhelmingly successful performances.  The compact cast of only 18 student actors perfectly gave a launching pad for endless possibilities for the future of Ottville. The production's intent was to see the most basic performance of the musical, focusing more on the acting and singing than technical and dance elements.  However, if you are interested in producing Ottville, rest assured that the show can easily utilize a small or large cast (18-40+ actors) and has the potential for many technical elements and extravagant choreography.

The workshop production rehearsed during the heat of summer for just over 6-weeks, with everyone volunteering countless hours.  The cast was extremely diverse in both age and experience level, but everyone involved dedicated themselves completely to the show.  Working on a new show brings its own struggles and obstacles that a previously produced show does not present.  Many revisions to songs and the script were brought to rehearsals, up to and through dress rehearsals.  Actors had to truly explore and pioneer never-before played roles and the directors were working with little previous experience.  However, the process went exceptionally well and proved to not only be possible but extremely successful.

Creative elements to the production and teaching the material was overseen by two people (Edward Bean and Trevor Dorner), who took on many roles and responsibilities including Directors, Producers, Choreographers, Music Director, Vocal Coach, Set Design, as well as also being the writers of the show.  Additional help came with costuming, borrowing equipment (both technical and for the set), catering, selling tickets and monitoring rehearsals.  Not enough thanks could possibly be given for all of the support we have received, which without, this would not have been possible.

This presents great promise if you are interested in producing Ottville, for the show is easy to learn, and fun to work with!  This is the perfect show for an adult community theatre group, professional theatre troupe, or college production, with diverse characters, challenging music, and a script thickly laden with meanings and well open to dramatic interpretations.  Currently, an original cast recording is being made and will soon be available for digital download on iTunes, Amazon, Napster, and many more sites!

Thank you for showing interest in Ottville! Details on obtaining rights and media from the show can be found below:

REVIEWS

"Rarely does a new project meet with as much enthusiasm and eager ears as will Ottville – sure-fire proof that theater (and new theater at that) is in fact alive and vibrant for participants other than wee ones and weekend-warrior suburbanites."

"They managed to blend elements of music, song, dance, intrigue, comedy, romance, murder, and mayhem into a raucous rollercoaster ride in and around the town of ‘Ottville’.  Each dip and turn of the ride exposing the true colors of the characters and revealing glimmers of the underlying social currents."

"...to have so much of it simply radiate with creativity and professionalism that would normally only come from years of experience and training? Unreal. Bravo everybody!”

OBTAINING THE RIGHTS

If you are interested in obtaining the rights to put on your own production of Ottville, please email Edward Bean (email found under the 'CONTACT' tab).  Specific pricing will be negotiated through email, pending on the number of shows, audience capacity, and type of company interested in performing the show.

With the rights to perform the agreed upon number of shows will come scripts and music (vocal books, voice/piano, trumpet, trombone, bass, and drums).

Ottville features 15 speaking/singing parts (8 m, 5 f, 2 m or f) and four un-named parts with lines.  The show also calls for a full chorus. 23 all-original songs make up this musically driven show. The musical is written in two acts, totaling a length of about two hours and fifteen minutes.  The show does include some adult language and due to the depth of the themes, it is recommended for an older cast (though some roles can easily be played by younger actors).
